Vintage Lionel
I NEED TO FIND THE VALUE OF LOTS OF LIONEL VINTAGE TRAINS. CAN ANYONE HELP?

The best thing you can do is buy yourself a copy of “Greenburg’s Pocket Price Guide to Lionel Trains.” These are readily available online or in a book store, and are relatively inexpensive.

Next, open the book, find the section on grading in the front, and read and study it carefully.

Look at each piece carefully, and decide how it grades. Be conservative-many people trying to sell want to badly overestimate the grade.

And, no, “mint condition for its age” is not a legitimate grade. Mint means “Brand New all original, unused and unblemished.” A piece which is mint should be clean, shiny, and have no rust, paint chips, or handling marks.

Now, look up the pieces in the guide by the number marked on the side of them. Find the listed price.

Take this price and subtract 30% from it, as Greenburg’s prices are inflated. This will give you a realistic idea of what everything is worth.

These two Diz discs bookend two-years’-worth of late-’40s Gillespie orchestra recordings with some earlier Teddy Hill Orchestra and Lionel Hampton Orchestra sides. Actually, the ’40s Gillespie-helmed recordings of “Manteca” and “Anthropology” begin the first disc, but that’s kind of a sequencing quirk. Also included here are later Metronome All-Stars baubles. Here’s a generous and savory taste of …

This 1938 MGM version of the Dickens classic is not the most rewarding of the various adaptations (that honor goes to Biran Desmond Hurst’s 1951 film, starring Alistair Sim), but it has a strong if narrow performance by Reginald Owen as the miser Ebenezer Scrooge. Directed by Edward L. Marin, the movie is stiffer and less imaginative than it ought to be, but there are some compensations in the su…

This 1968 kiddie-car caper is flawed but solid family fare. It retains a quaint charm while some of the songs–including the title tune–are quite hummable. A huge plus is Dick Van Dyke, who is extremely appealing as an eccentric inventor around the turn of the century. With nimble fingers and a unique way of looking at the world, he invents for his children a magic car that floats and flies. Or …

Pop quiz. Please complete the following sentence: “There are days when I get up in the morning and stagger into the bathroom and begin running water and then I look up and I don’t even recognize my own _.” If you answered face, then your name is obviously not Jonathan Lethem. Instead of taking the easy out, the genre-busting novelist concludes this by-the-numbers string of words with toothbr…
