What’s the fuel consumption of a deisel electric train?
What’s the fuel consumption of a deisel electric train such as a Vulcan (the train not the aeroplane)?
The diesel/electric train I had in mind was a passenger hauling locomotive such as the Vulcan diesel/electric.
The closest answer I can give is at least fairly accurate, even though it’s a bit out of date and not for a modern diesel-electric.
The old Warship class diesel hydraulics used to average 1 mile per gallon hauling 400 tons at 80 mph between Bristol and London. These were 1960s locomotives so I expect the figure is much better with modern machines.
The actual fuel consumption for any train at any one time will vary considerably with speed, load, gradient, wind conditions (very significant with a long train) and driving style (some drivers are more ‘heavy handed’ than others).
